About This Service

Same-day clog removal for slow drains, full backups, and recurring blockages. Cable augering for typical stoppages, 4,000 PSI hydro jetting for grease and scale, camera inspection when the same drain keeps clogging.

Most drain calls are one of three things: a single fixture clog (bathroom sink, tub, kitchen sink, toilet), a branch-line clog backing up multiple fixtures on the same wall, or a main-line clog that backs the whole house up at the lowest fixture. We diagnose which on the call before we dispatch — branch versus main matters because they need different equipment, and we'd rather show up with the right tool than have to roll a second truck.

The lowest fixture is the tell. If the shower pan or a floor drain fills when someone runs the washing machine, the blockage is downstream of everything and it is a main-line problem. If only the kitchen backs up and the bathrooms behave, it is a branch. And if a toilet gurgles when a nearby tub drains, air is being pulled through the trap seal, which usually means the blockage is partial and further along than the fixture you are standing at. None of that requires a technician to establish — it is worth checking before you call anyone, because it changes what should turn up at your door.

For typical stoppages — hair, soap, food waste, paper buildup — a properly sized cable auger clears the line in 30–60 minutes. We size the cable to the pipe diameter, because a 1/4-inch cable in a 4-inch main does nothing useful but bore a hole through the middle of the obstruction. That distinction matters more than it sounds: a cable that punches a channel through a grease plug restores flow the same afternoon and leaves ninety percent of the deposit welded to the pipe wall, which is why the same drain is back three months later.

Cable is the right tool for a discrete object and the wrong one for a coating. Roots, wipes, a child's toy, a collapsed wad of paper — all cable work. Grease, soap scum, scale and biofilm are coatings, and they need shear force against the wall rather than a hole through the middle.

That is the case for 4,000 PSI hydro jetting, which scours the pipe back toward bare material so there is no residue left for the next clog to build on. It is also the reason we quote jetting rather than cabling on a restaurant line or on any drain that has already been cleared once this year — cabling it again would be cheaper for an afternoon and more expensive by spring.

What the pipe is made of changes the answer more than the clog does, and in the South Bay the material usually follows the build year. Cast iron drain lines under homes from the aerospace-era tracts in Hawthorne and Gardena scale from the inside out: the bore narrows, the surface roughens, and a four-inch line that has lost an inch of diameter to tuberculation will catch things a smooth pipe would pass. Those lines clear well and clog again on a predictable cycle until the pipe is replaced, and we would rather tell you that on the first visit than sell you the same service four times.

Vitrified clay laterals — the standard under most pre-1960s South Bay construction, and still under a great deal of Torrance, Gardena and San Pedro — fail differently. Clay comes in short sections with mortared joints, and roots do not break into a sound pipe; they find a joint that has already shifted and follow the moisture in. Cutting them clears the line, but the joint is still open and the root is still alive, so the interval to the next backup is set by how fast that species grows. In the Tree Section of Manhattan Beach, where mature jacaranda and elm sit directly over the lateral run, that interval can be under a year.

The material worth knowing about by name is Orangeburg — bituminized wood fibre pipe, installed through the 1940s and early 1950s and present under original construction in parts of El Segundo and San Pedro. It deforms under load rather than cracking, going oval and then flattening, and it is soft enough that an aggressive cable can tear straight through the wall. When the camera shows Orangeburg we stop and say so, because clearing it is a short-term measure on a pipe that has no long-term left in it.

Then there is the failure that is not a clog at all. Expansive clay soil across the central tracts of Hawthorne, Gardena and Carson swells when it takes water and shrinks when it dries, and a lateral bedded in it moves with the seasons. Over decades that produces a belly — a low section holding standing water where solids drop out and accumulate. A belly clears beautifully and backs up again, because nothing was wrong with the pipe's cleanliness; the problem is its slope. The only way to tell a belly from a recurring clog is to watch water sit in the low spot on camera after the line has been cleared, which is why the camera pass matters on the second call rather than the fifth.

One local complication worth raising before it costs someone money: on the narrow lots in Hermosa Beach, where thirty-foot frontages are the norm, adjacent properties were built sharing a single sewer lateral out to the main. If your line backs up and your neighbour's does too, that is not coincidence, and clearing it from one side is a conversation about a pipe two households depend on. We flag it when the camera shows a tie-in that should not be there, because finding out during a repair is considerably worse than finding out during a cleaning.

Two things we will not do. We will not pour a caustic drain product into a line as a first step — the sodium hydroxide and sulphuric acid products sold for the purpose generate heat inside a blocked pipe, do very little to a full obstruction, and leave a standing column of corrosive liquid that has to be dealt with before anyone can cable through it safely. If you have already used one, tell the technician; it changes how the job is opened. And we will not call a line clear because water is moving again. Restored flow through a channel in a grease plug is a temporary result and we do not bill it as a permanent one.

When a main line clogs more than once in six months, the line itself usually has an underlying problem — root intrusion at a failed joint, a belly holding water, a partially collapsed section, or scale narrowing the diameter to less than half.

We add a high-definition sewer camera inspection on every recurring main-line call to find the actual cause, record it on video, and locate the defect to a depth and a point on the ground so the repair can be quoted against something real. You get the footage whether or not you do the work with us.

If the pipe itself is finished, the fix is a pipe replacement rather than another cleaning, and in most South Bay yards that can be done without an open trench — trenchless pipe bursting pulls a new HDPE lateral through the path of the old one from two small pits. We quote that separately and on your timeline. Nothing about a drain call obliges you to decide about a lateral the same day, and a technician who tells you otherwise is selling rather than diagnosing.

Flat-rate pricing across every call type — no per-foot creep, no per-hour creep, no surprise charges once the truck is in the driveway. Licensed C-36 901735, and the same crew on a $200 stoppage as on a full lateral replacement. Call (310) 808-7343.

Step by Step

How It Works

1

Phone Triage

We ask which fixtures, how fast it backs up, whether it's recurring, whether you have an accessible cleanout. The right truck shows up with the right tools.

2

Clear the Clog

Cable auger sized to the pipe diameter for typical stoppages; 4,000 PSI hydro jetter for grease, scale, and recurring blockages.

3

Camera Scope

Recurring main-line backups get a high-definition camera pass to document the actual cause — roots, offset, belly, or collapsed section.

4

Prevent Recurrence

We tell you what caused it and what to do — or not do — to keep it from coming back. Maintenance jetting schedules available for chronic lines.

The Difference

Traditional vs. Property-Friendly

Traditional Method
  • Destructive excavation of your property
  • Days or weeks of disruption
  • Expensive landscape restoration
  • Mess and debris left behind
Property-Friendly Method
  • Minimal to no excavation needed
  • Completed in hours, not days
  • Your landscaping stays intact
  • Clean, professional worksite
