Gas Line Repair, Replacement & New Installation.

Gas line work is where plumbing overlaps with immediate life-safety exposure, and it's one of the service categories where licensing and experience matter most. We hold the California C-36 license required for residential and commercial gas work, and every gas job we do goes through the full protocol: pressure testing with a calibrated manometer, leak testing with electronic detection plus soap solution verification, joint inspection for correct thread engagement and sealant application, and code-compliant shutoff valve placement. No exceptions, regardless of project size.

Most of the gas line work we do traces back to the age of the supply piping rather than to anything dramatic. Lomita's pre-war blocks, built between 1930 and 1948, and Inglewood's original Morningside stock from 1908 to 1940 both commonly still carry the galvanized supply they were built with. Galvanized corrodes from the inside out, and on a gas run that means scale, restricted flow to appliances, and threaded joints that have worked loose across eighty years of thermal cycling. Torrance's Old Town, 1912 to 1935, is the same story a few streets over. None of that is an emergency on its own. It is the reason a pressure test comes back soft when someone adds a range or a pool heater and the existing line will not carry the extra load.

A failed pressure test is the most common way this starts. SoCalGas will lock a meter if the system will not hold pressure, and the lock does not come off until a licensed contractor has found the fault, repaired it, and the system passes again. We isolate section by section to find where the drop actually is, rather than replacing the whole run on principle — on an older galvanized system the fault is usually one or two joints, not the entire line. Where a run genuinely is at end of life we will say so and quote the replacement, but that is a finding, not a default.

Material choice is not one-size-fits-all, and it is one of the places a cheap job shows up years later. Black iron remains the right answer for most interior runs. CSST — corrugated stainless steel tubing — installs faster through framing and around obstacles, but it has to be bonded correctly to the electrical system or it becomes a lightning-strike risk: exactly the kind of shortcut that passes a visual inspection and fails a decade on. We size every run on total BTU demand including whatever is being added, not on whatever happens to fit the existing pipe.

On the new-installation side, outdoor living has driven a steady stream of gas line work — fire pits, outdoor kitchens, BBQ hookups, pool and spa heaters, patio heaters. We size the gas supply based on total BTU demand including the new appliance, run appropriate pipe (black iron, CSST, or copper depending on application and local code), install a dedicated shutoff valve, pressure-test to 1.5× operating pressure, and coordinate the city inspection. Most outdoor kitchen gas runs are completed in a single day; multi-appliance installations with new BBQ + fire pit + pool heater may run two days including the inspection.

Carson is its own case. Industrial Carson has run continuously since the 1920s, and methane soil-gas zones sit across the former oil-field areas — deep excavation there can trigger a geological hazards review before anyone breaks ground. That is worth knowing while you are still planning, because it moves the schedule rather than the price, and discovering it mid-job is how a two-day project becomes a three-week one. Pressure class decides who else has to sign off. In Torrance, higher-pressure runs — anything above seven inches of water column — need a SoCalGas-coordinated inspection on top of city sign-off, which means a second appointment and a second calendar to work around. Permit shops vary widely across the service area: Carson Building & Safety turns residential plumbing permits in one to two business days, and Lomita is the most straightforward shop we deal with anywhere in the South Bay. We pull the permits and book the inspections as part of the job rather than handing you a form.

There is gas work we will not take on, and it is worth being clear which. We do not touch the utility side of the meter — that is SoCalGas property and their crew's responsibility, and a plumber working there would be both outside their licence and a hazard. Repairs internal to an appliance belong to the manufacturer or an appliance technician. What we own is everything from the outlet side of the meter through the house: the runs, the fittings, the shutoffs, the pressure tests and the permits.
