Pipe bursting is the only trenchless method that actually replaces your sewer line. A hydraulic bursting head is pulled through the existing pipe on a steel cable, fracturing the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil while simultaneously pulling a new HDPE (high-density polyethylene) pipe into the same path. The result is a brand-new, fully fused, jointless pipe with a 50+ year expected service life — installed in a single day through two small access pits.

Here's why that matters versus the old way of replacing a sewer line. Traditional "dig and replace" means excavating an open trench along the entire run of pipe — often 40 to 100 feet across your yard, under your driveway, and past mature trees — hauling out the broken pipe, laying new pipe, backfilling, and then paying to rebuild everything you tore up: concrete, landscaping, irrigation, hardscape. Pipe bursting reaches the same end result — a completely new pipe — without any of that. We destroy the old pipe in place and thread the new one through the exact same underground path, so the ground between the two access pits is never opened.

We recommend pipe bursting when the host pipe is past the point of lining. Collapsed sections, severely offset joints, undersized original lines (many pre-1970 South Bay homes have 4-inch clay laterals that benefit from an upsize to 6-inch), and lines destroyed by decades of root intrusion are all prime pipe bursting candidates. Because HDPE is fusion-welded into a continuous length before installation, there are no joints for roots to exploit — the new line is effectively root-proof for its entire lifespan. When a pipe is too far gone to reline but you still want to avoid an open trench, bursting is the method that makes that possible.

A hydraulic rig pulls the bursting head through the old line on a cable. The head fractures the failed pipe outward and drags the new HDPE in behind it — all below grade.
A typical residential pipe bursting job runs one day from start to finish, assuming permits are already pulled. We excavate two access pits — usually about 4' × 4', one at the house cleanout and one near the city main at the curb — and the HDPE is pulled through the existing pipe path between them.
