The actual pipe burst itself typically takes 2–4 hours; the rest of the day is access pit excavation, fusion welding of the HDPE sections, camera verification, and backfill.

For sewer laterals, yes — substantially. HDPE is fusion-welded rather than joint-bonded, so there are no joints for roots to penetrate or for soil movement to separate. It's flexible enough to handle minor soil settling without cracking, chemically inert against everything that goes down a sewer, and rated for 50+ years of service. Clay and orangeburg fail at the joints; cast iron rusts from the inside out; PVC is joint-bonded and brittle over time. HDPE has none of those failure modes.

No, and that's the entire point of choosing it over traditional excavation. Two small access pits — typically about 4' × 4' — are all we need. The 40–100 feet of pipe between them stays completely undisturbed. Mature trees, lawns, irrigation systems, decorative hardscape, and driveways are untouched. Access pits are backfilled and restored at the end of the job.

The pipe bursting itself often costs more per foot than an open trench, but the all-in cost is usually substantially lower once you factor in what a traditional dig requires: landscape restoration, hardscape replacement, concrete work, irrigation repair, and the time your property is out of service. Yes — that's one of pipe bursting's advantages. The bursting head can accommodate a new pipe one or even two sizes larger than the original. Upsizing from 4-inch to 6-inch is common on older homes that are adding bathrooms, doing major remodels, or simply want the flow headroom. The upsize happens in the same single-day install.
