UV Water Purification Systems.

UV purification is the chemical-free way to handle microbial contamination. A UV-C lamp housed inside a stainless steel reactor chamber is plumbed into the supply line after filtration; water flows past the lamp and the 254-nanometer UV-C radiation disrupts the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and protozoan cysts so they can't reproduce. The treatment is instantaneous, leaves no taste or smell behind, adds no chemicals to the water, and requires no contact tank or residence time. For municipally-supplied South Bay homes the chlorination at the treatment plant already handles standard microbial concerns, so UV is most commonly installed in three scenarios: well-water properties in the Palos Verdes and Rolling Hills Estates hill zones, commercial properties (restaurants, medical offices, daycares) where the additional barrier is part of compliance or risk reduction, and residential homes with immunocompromised members where the redundancy matters.

Sizing matters more for UV than for any other filtration stage. The kill dose is a function of water flow rate (faster flow = less exposure time = lower dose), so undersized systems leave a fraction of pathogens viable even when the lamp is functioning correctly. We size to household peak GPM — typically a 12–15 GPM unit for a 3–4 bath home with a full filtration train upstream, scaled up for higher-flow installations or commercial loads. The water entering the UV reactor must be clear (typically <5 NTU turbidity), because particulates physically shadow microbes from the UV exposure. That's why UV always comes last in the filtration train, after sediment, carbon, and softening have removed everything that would scatter the light.

Maintenance is straightforward but non-negotiable. The UV-C lamp continues to glow visibly long after its kill output has dropped below threshold, so we replace the lamp annually on a schedule whether it 'looks' fine or not. The quartz sleeve that separates the lamp from the water gets a thin film of mineral and biofilm over time — twice-yearly cleaning maintains UV transmission through the sleeve. Modern controllers include a UV intensity sensor and an audible alarm that triggers if output drops below the kill threshold so you know immediately if something is wrong. Total cost of ownership is low: $80–$150 in lamp and quartz cleaning supplies per year, plus minimal electricity to keep the lamp running (typically <$5/month). For the households and properties that actually need it, UV is the highest-confidence barrier against waterborne pathogens that residential plumbing can provide.
