About This Service

Service line repair from the meter to the house. Trenchless replacement options for galvanized and lead service lines.

The water main (also called the water service line) is the supply line running from the city meter at the curb to your house. It's typically 1-inch or 1.25-inch copper or PEX in newer construction, or galvanized steel and (rarely) lead in pre-1970 homes. Failure modes are age-driven: galvanized fails by internal corrosion narrowing the diameter and eventually rusting through; copper fails by pinhole pitting; old lead fails by fitting corrosion.

Symptoms are persistent low pressure across all fixtures, audible running water at the meter when fixtures are off, a wet patch in the yard between meter and house, or an unexplained jump in the water bill. We trace the leak with electronic equipment and acoustic listening, then either spot-repair (single failure on otherwise sound pipe) or trenchlessly replace the whole line (multiple failures, old galvanized, or any lead). Trenchless replacement uses two small access pits — typically one near the meter and one at the house entry — so the yard, driveway, and any hardscape between them stay intact.

Galvanized service lines from pre-1970 construction are the highest-priority replacement targets — internal rust restricts flow until the entire house has weak pressure, and the line typically fails by rust-through within a 6-12 month window once symptoms start. Lead service lines (rare but present in some pre-1950 homes) should be replaced regardless of current condition for health reasons.

Step by Step

How It Works

1

Pressure-test from the meter

Isolate the service line at the meter and pressure-test to confirm the leak is in the service line, not interior plumbing or irrigation. Saves a yard dig for the wrong reason.

2

Trace the leak

Electronic line tracing locates the line's exact path through the yard; acoustic equipment pinpoints the leak within a few feet. Marked on the surface before excavation.

3

Spot repair or trenchless replace

Single failure on sound copper — direct excavation, replace failed section, backfill. Multiple failures, galvanized, or lead — trenchless pipe pulling installs new PEX or copper through the existing path.

4

Pressure-verify & restore

Re-pressure-test for zero leak rate. Restore landscape and hardscape; trenchless replacements only need backfill at the two pit locations.

The Difference

Traditional vs. Property-Friendly

Traditional Method
  • Destructive excavation of your property
  • Days or weeks of disruption
  • Expensive landscape restoration
  • Mess and debris left behind
Property-Friendly Method
  • Minimal to no excavation needed
  • Completed in hours, not days
  • Your landscaping stays intact
  • Clean, professional worksite
